If you are visiting Cape Town, seeing African penguins is probably high on your list of things to do. They are one of South Africa’s most charming and unusual attractions, and there are two main penguin colonies that visitors often consider: Boulders Beach and Betty’s Bay.
So, which one should you visit?
The answer depends largely on your itinerary, how much time you have and the kind of experience you are looking for.
Boulders Beach: The Famous Choice
Boulders Beach, near Simon’s Town on the Cape Peninsula, is the most famous place to see African penguins around Cape Town.
It is easy to understand why. The penguins live in a beautiful coastal setting, and visitors can get excellent views of them as they waddle between the rocks, swim in the water and sun themselves on the beach.
Boulders Beach is also very convenient for visitors following the classic Cape Peninsula route. A day visiting Cape Point can easily include stops at places such as Hout Bay, Chapman’s Peak, the Cape of Good Hope and Boulders Beach.
That makes it a very practical choice if you only have a limited amount of time in Cape Town.
The main disadvantage is that Boulders Beach is extremely popular. During busy periods, it can become crowded, particularly in the middle of the day. You are visiting one of Cape Town’s most famous attractions, after all.
However, the popularity is understandable. Boulders Beach is beautiful, the penguins are easy to see and it fits perfectly into one of the great day trips from Cape Town.
Betty’s Bay: The Quieter Alternative
Betty’s Bay offers a different experience.
Located on the beautiful Clarence Drive between Gordon’s Bay and Kleinmond, Betty’s Bay is home to another African penguin colony at Stony Point.
For many visitors, the biggest attraction is the atmosphere. It is generally a quieter and more peaceful experience than Boulders Beach.
The coastal scenery is spectacular, and the drive itself is a major part of the experience. The road between Gordon’s Bay and Betty’s Bay is one of the most beautiful coastal drives in the Western Cape, with mountains on one side and the ocean on the other.
Betty’s Bay can be an excellent choice if you are travelling towards Hermanus or exploring the Whale Coast.
The disadvantage is that it is not as convenient if your main plan is to visit Cape Town and the Cape Peninsula. It is in a different direction, and travelling there simply to see the penguins may not be the most efficient use of your time.
So Which One Is Better?
The honest answer is that neither is simply “better”. They are different experiences, and the right choice depends on your itinerary.
If you are visiting Cape Town for a few days and planning to explore the Cape Peninsula, I would recommend Boulders Beach. It fits naturally into the route and allows you to combine the penguins with some of the most spectacular scenery in South Africa.
You can enjoy the coast, visit the penguins, continue towards Cape Point and experience one of the great day trips from Cape Town.
However, if you are doing the Garden Route, I would choose Betty’s Bay.
For me, Betty’s Bay offers a better overall experience. There are generally fewer people, and the whole visit feels more natural and organic. You are not simply arriving at a famous attraction, joining the crowds and looking at the penguins before getting back into the car.
Instead, the penguins are part of a beautiful coastal journey.
The drive along Clarence Drive is spectacular, with the mountains on one side and the ocean on the other. The scenery is incredible, and the quieter atmosphere at Betty’s Bay allows you to enjoy the experience at a more relaxed pace.
It feels less like a major tourist attraction and more like discovering something special along the way.

We know that many visitors would rather experience South Africa at a more relaxed pace than spend their day standing in queues and following large groups of tourists.
We also know a few quieter spots where, if you are lucky, you may see African penguins roaming along the beaches adjacent to the main national park area.
There are no guarantees when it comes to wildlife, of course, and that is part of what makes the experience so special. But sometimes, getting away from the crowds and discovering the less obvious places can lead to the most memorable moments.
That is one of the advantages of travelling with a local guide who knows the area well. Sometimes the best experiences are not necessarily the ones listed in every guidebook.
And the Winner Is…
So, Boulders Beach or Betty’s Bay?
If you are doing the Cape Peninsula, Boulders Beach is the obvious choice. It is convenient, beautiful and fits naturally into the route.
But if you are travelling towards the Garden Route, or simply want a quieter and more natural experience, my winner is Betty’s Bay.
The fewer crowds, the spectacular coastal scenery and the feeling that you are discovering something a little less obvious all add up to a more enjoyable experience.
The winner is Betty’s Bay.
