If you’re planning a trip to Cape Town and wondering whether you need to pack mosquito repellent, the short answer is: yes, there are mosquitoes in Cape Town, but for most visitors they are not a major problem.
Cape Town has a Mediterranean climate, with warm, dry summers and cooler, wetter winters. You may encounter mosquitoes, particularly during warmer weather and around areas with standing water, gardens or swimming pools, but Cape Town is certainly not a destination where you should expect to spend your holiday constantly fighting them off.
Is Cape Town a Malaria Area?
No. Cape Town is not a malaria-risk area, and neither is the Garden Route.
This is an important distinction because many visitors understandably associate a trip to Africa with malaria. South Africa is a huge country, and malaria risk is limited to certain parts of the country, mainly in the northeast.
If your holiday consists of Cape Town, the Cape Peninsula, Winelands and the Garden Route, malaria medication is not normally required specifically for those destinations.
If you’re travelling elsewhere in South Africa, particularly towards the Kruger National Park or areas close to the borders with Mozambique and Zimbabwe, that’s a different matter and you should check the current health advice for your exact destination before travelling.
Do You Need Mosquito Repellent in Cape Town?
It isn’t something I’d worry too much about.
If you tend to get bitten, bringing a small bottle of mosquito repellent is sensible, especially during the warmer months. You can also easily buy mosquito sprays, plug-in repellents and other products from supermarkets and pharmacies once you’re here.
You’re more likely to notice the occasional mosquito in the evening, particularly if you’re sitting outside or staying somewhere surrounded by vegetation.
Along the Garden Route, the same basic advice applies. There are mosquitoes, especially around wetter and greener areas, but they aren’t generally something that dominates a trip.
One Less Thing to Worry About
People travelling to South Africa for the first time often have a long list of questions that those of us who know the country don’t really think about.
Mosquitoes are one of them.
So yes, pack some repellent if mosquitoes particularly like you. But if you’re visiting Cape Town and travelling the Garden Route, don’t imagine clouds of mosquitoes waiting for you when you step off the plane.
They’ve got better things to do.
