If you’ve visited Cape Point, you may have noticed the little railway that runs up the hill towards the lighthouse.

It’s called the Flying Dutchman Funicular, and it’s one of those small attractions that can easily be overlooked when you’re concentrating on the spectacular scenery around Cape Point.

The funicular takes visitors up towards the old Cape Point lighthouse, saving you the walk up the steep path. It’s particularly useful if you don’t fancy walking uphill, or if you’re travelling with someone who would rather save their energy for exploring the rest of Cape Point.

But should you take it?

Well, that depends.

Personally, I think walking up can be part of the experience if you’re comfortable doing it. The path isn’t particularly long, and as you climb, the views become even better.

But there is another option that many visitors don’t know about.

There is a second lighthouse at Cape Point, and there is a little-known hike that takes you towards it.

I’m not going to give away all the details here — that’s a story for another blog post — but if you enjoy getting away from the usual tourist routes, it’s definitely worth knowing about.

The second lighthouse is lower down and was built because the original lighthouse wasn’t always visible to ships approaching Cape Point in poor weather. It’s a fascinating part of the history of the area and, in my opinion, well worth discovering.

For most visitors, though, the Flying Dutchman is the easiest way to get up towards the famous old lighthouse.

When I take guests to Cape Point, I don’t believe everyone needs to do exactly the same thing. Some people want to walk, some would rather take the funicular, and others are more interested in the views, wildlife and coastline.

That’s one of the advantages of travelling privately.

You don’t have to follow a crowd.

You can take your time, enjoy Cape Point at your own pace and decide for yourself how much exploring you want to do.

Cape Point has its secrets. If you rush in and out, you’re going to miss them.
