Cape Town can get seriously hot, so sandals or flip-flops (or slops, as they’re called in South Africa) make perfect sense for strolling around the city or relaxing at the beach.
However, if you’re heading out on a Cape Peninsula tour, a comfortable pair of trainers is the better choice. There are short walks at places like the Cape of Good Hope, uneven paths in places, and, if a cheeky baboon decides your pizza looks better than its lunch at Cape Point, you’ll be glad you’re wearing something you can actually run in!
For a Cape Winelands tour, you can wear pretty much anything you like. Sandals, slops, or casual shoes are all perfectly fine. That said, trainers are still the best option, simply because you’ll be doing a fair bit of walking while exploring the beautiful little town of Franschhoek. They’re also ideal for wandering through vineyards, wine estates, and the charming streets in complete comfort.
One final tip: Cape Town’s weather can change quickly, especially around the Cape Peninsula, so it’s always worth bringing a light jacket, even on a warm day. It’s much better to have it and not need it than wish you’d packed one when the famous Cape wind picks up.
