Healthcare in South Africa: What Visitors Need to Know
Nobody plans to get sick or need medical treatment while on holiday, but occasionally things happen. A tooth starts playing up, you pick up a stomach bug, you have an infection, or you simply need to see a doctor. It is therefore worth knowing a little about healthcare in South Africa before you arrive
The most important advice we can give any international visitor is simple: make sure you have full travel insurance with comprehensive medical cover.
South Africa has an excellent private healthcare system, and private hospitals, doctors, dentists and medical centres can be found throughout the country. If you need to see a doctor or dentist at short notice, it is generally possible to arrange an appointment and pay for the consultation or treatment yourself. Depending on your insurance policy, you can then make a claim for the costs.
For minor problems, this can be a very straightforward process. You may simply need to pay for a consultation, treatment or medication and keep your receipts for your insurance company.
The situation is very different if you require hospital treatment.
South Africa has a public healthcare system, but emergency departments at government hospitals can have long waiting times, particularly when they are busy. For visitors who need urgent treatment, private healthcare is often the preferred option.
Private healthcare in South Africa is generally of a very high standard, but it can also be expensive. If you need to be admitted to a private hospital, the costs can quickly become substantial. This is why having comprehensive travel insurance is so important.
Make sure your insurance covers emergency medical treatment, hospital admission and, where appropriate, medical evacuation or repatriation. Check the details of your policy before travelling and make sure you understand any exclusions. If you have existing medical conditions, make sure these are properly declared to your insurer.
Over the years, we have had clients who have needed medical treatment while travelling with us for various reasons. Some have needed to see a doctor, while others have required dental treatment or other medical attention.
Thankfully, none of our clients have needed to be admitted to hospital, but they all had full travel insurance in place. That gives you enormous peace of mind if something unexpected happens.
This is also another benefit of booking a private tour with Convoy Tours.
If you are travelling independently and suddenly become unwell, you may have to work out where to go, how to get there and how the local healthcare system works, all while feeling ill. When you are travelling with us, you have a local tour operator who can help with the practical side of things.
I am also a healthcare professional, so I understand the importance of getting appropriate medical attention when it is needed. We are not a medical service, but if one of our clients becomes unwell during the tour, we can help them find appropriate medical care and assist with the practical arrangements.
We always recommend keeping your travel insurance details, policy number and emergency assistance telephone number easily accessible. If you need medical treatment, contact your insurance company as soon as possible and keep all receipts, invoices and medical documentation.
South Africa is a wonderful country to explore, and the vast majority of our guests complete their Garden Route adventure without needing any medical attention whatsoever. But accidents and illness can happen anywhere in the world.
Our advice is simple: enjoy your holiday, don’t worry unnecessarily, but make sure you have comprehensive travel insurance before you arrive.
It is one of the most important things you can pack.
