Kingklip is a large marine fish found in the waters around southern Africa. The species commonly found around South Africa is the southern kingklip, Genypterus capensis. It occurs along much of the South African coastline and is also found in waters off Namibia.

Despite its long, eel-like appearance, the kingklip is not a true eel. It belongs to the family Ophidiidae, a group of fish commonly known as cusk-eels. Its elongated body gradually tapers towards the tail, with the dorsal, tail and anal fins forming a continuous fin around the rear of the body.

Kingklip can grow to an impressive size. Large individuals can reach around 1.8 metres in length, although most are considerably smaller. They have relatively large heads and powerful mouths suited to catching prey.

They are bottom-dwelling fish and spend much of their lives close to the seabed. Kingklip are generally associated with deeper offshore waters and are commonly found over rocky areas and other complex seabed habitats. Their depth range extends from relatively shallow offshore water to several hundred metres below the surface.

Kingklip are predators. Their diet includes fish, squid and crustaceans. Rather than being fast-moving open-ocean hunters, their body shape and habitat are suited to life close to the seafloor, where they search for and capture other marine animals.

Reproduction takes place through spawning, with females releasing eggs that are fertilised in the water. Like many marine fish, kingklip grow gradually over a number of years. Scientists can estimate the age of individual fish by examining structures called otoliths. These small calcium carbonate structures are found inside the head and play an important role in balance and hearing.

The waters surrounding South Africa provide a particularly interesting environment for the species. The country’s coastline is influenced by two major ocean systems: the cold Benguela system along the west coast and the warmer Agulhas Current flowing southwards along the east coast.

Kingklip form part of the remarkable diversity of marine life found beneath these waters. Although most people will never see one in its natural habitat because of the depths at which it commonly lives, it is one of the more distinctive large fish found around southern Africa.

With its elongated body, considerable size and deep-water lifestyle, the kingklip is a fascinating example of the marine species living beneath South Africa’s coastline.
