The Garden Route is one of the most beautiful parts of South Africa, stretching through forests, mountains, beaches and small coastal towns. However, many visitors are surprised to discover that exploring it without a car can be difficult.

There are long-distance buses travelling between Cape Town and towns such as George, Wilderness, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay. These are useful if you simply need to travel from one town to another, but they are not designed for sightseeing. Bus stations are not always near hotels, and many of the Garden Route’s best attractions are located outside the town centres.

Once you arrive, local public transport is limited. There is no convenient train service connecting the main Garden Route destinations, and you cannot simply hop on and off a bus at places such as Robberg Nature Reserve, Tsitsikamma National Park or the Knysna Heads.

Taxis and private transfers are available, but using them for several separate journeys can quickly become expensive. They also need to be arranged in advance, particularly when visiting nature reserves or attractions away from the main towns.

Hiring a car is one solution, but it does not suit everyone. Some international visitors are uncomfortable driving on the left-hand side of the road. Others do not want to navigate an unfamiliar country, spend hours behind the wheel or worry about parking and directions while they are on holiday.

The distance is also worth considering. Cape Town to Knysna is approximately 490 kilometres, and the journey takes around six hours without extended stops. The drive is perfectly manageable, but it can feel long if you have just arrived after an international flight or are not accustomed to South African roads.
