The Best Short Walks on the Garden Route for Older Travellers

The Garden Route is famous for its dramatic scenery, indigenous forests, beautiful beaches, lagoons and abundant wildlife. But you don’t have to be a serious hiker to enjoy it.

In fact, some of the most spectacular places along the Garden Route can be enjoyed with relatively short walks, making them ideal for older travellers who want to experience the scenery without spending hours on demanding trails.

At Convoy Tours, we believe the Garden Route should be enjoyed at your own pace. Because our tours are private, we can adapt the day around you rather than expecting everyone to follow the same itinerary.

Knysna Heads

Knysna Heads is one of the best places on the Garden Route for enjoying spectacular scenery without undertaking a long hike.

The viewpoints around the Eastern Head provide wonderful views across the Knysna Lagoon, the Indian Ocean and the dramatic coastline.

There is no need to rush. Take your time, take some photographs and simply enjoy being there.

Robberg Nature Reserve

Robberg, near Plettenberg Bay, is one of the Garden Route’s most spectacular natural attractions.

The reserve has several trails, including longer and more demanding routes, but you certainly don’t have to complete the full circuit to appreciate what makes Robberg so special.

A shorter walk can still give you magnificent views of the coastline, cliffs and ocean. Seals can often be seen below, while the reserve is also important for its archaeological history.

The key is simply choosing a section of the trail that suits your fitness, mobility and confidence.

Tsitsikamma National Park

Tsitsikamma National Park is another fantastic place to experience the Garden Route without taking on a strenuous hike.

The famous suspension bridges at Storms River Mouth are a highlight. The walk involves some steps and uneven surfaces, so comfortable footwear and taking your time are important.

But you don’t need to rush. Stop when you want to, enjoy the forest and take in the spectacular views over the Storms River mouth and Indian Ocean.

Wilderness

The Wilderness area offers a completely different experience, with lakes, rivers, forests and beautiful natural surroundings.

There are several shorter walks and easier sections where you can enjoy the scenery without committing to a demanding mountain trail.

It is a wonderful place to slow down, breathe in the fresh air and appreciate the quieter side of the Garden Route.

You Don’t Have to Be a Hiker

One of the advantages of travelling privately with Convoy Tours is that we don’t expect every guest to have the same level of mobility.

If you enjoy walking, we’ll find opportunities for you to explore.

If you would rather take a shorter stroll, that’s perfectly fine too.

And even if you can’t manage any kind of significant distance, we can still ensure you enjoy the best viewpoints and scenery along the route.

Pull up a chair — we will have one — have a cup of tea and enjoy the view.

The Garden Route isn’t about how far you can walk. It’s about the places you see, the experiences you have and the memories you take home with you.

Age should never be a reason to miss the Garden Route. With a private tour, we can take our time, stop for photographs, take breaks when necessary and spend longer at the places you particularly enjoy.

You don’t have to conquer a mountain to experience the Garden Route.

Sometimes, a short walk, a spectacular viewpoint, a comfortable chair and a little time to appreciate where you are is all you need.
