Using an ATM in Cape Town and elsewhere in South Africa is generally safe, provided you exercise the same common sense and caution you would when visiting any unfamiliar country.
My personal recommendation is to use ATMs inside busy shopping centres, particularly places such as the V&A Waterfront. These areas are enclosed, have security personnel and usually have plenty of people around throughout the day. ATMs located inside bank branches are another good option, especially during normal banking hours. If you experience a problem with the machine or your card, bank staff will be nearby to assist you.
I would avoid using an isolated ATM late at night or one situated somewhere quiet with very few people around. There is normally no reason to take that risk when safer and more convenient options are widely available.
Before inserting your card, take a quick look at the machine. If anything appears loose, damaged or unusual, simply use another ATM. Keep your PIN covered when entering it, do not accept assistance from strangers and never allow anyone to distract you while completing a transaction. If somebody stands too close or makes you feel uncomfortable, cancel the transaction and walk away.
It is also sensible to withdraw a reasonable amount rather than carrying a large quantity of cash. The good news is that visitors do not need much cash while travelling around South Africa. Debit and credit cards are accepted almost everywhere, including hotels, restaurants, supermarkets, petrol stations and most tourist attractions. Contactless payments are also widely available, making it easy to tap your card or phone.
Having a small amount of cash can still be useful for tips, informal markets or the occasional small purchase, but there is no need to walk around with large sums in your wallet.
Before travelling, let your bank know that you will be using your card in South Africa if necessary, and make sure you have a way to contact them if your card is lost or blocked. It is also worth carrying a second card and keeping it separately from your main one.
Cape Town is a modern international city, and accessing your money is usually simple and convenient. Choose a busy, secure location, remain aware of your surroundings and follow the same sensible precautions you would use anywhere else in the world. There is no need to worry—just take reasonable care and enjoy your visit.
