Why Is the Ocean So Cold in Cape Town?

Cape Town has two distinctly different coastal environments. The Atlantic Seaboard, including Camps Bay and Clifton, generally has much colder water than False Bay, where beaches such as Muizenberg are located.

The difference is caused primarily by ocean circulation, wind-driven upwelling and the geography of the Cape Peninsula.

The Camps Bay Side

Camps Bay lies on the western, Atlantic side of the Cape Peninsula.

This coastline is influenced by the cold Benguela Current system, which flows northwards along the west coast of southern Africa. Water temperatures are also strongly affected by coastal upwelling.

Upwelling occurs when winds move surface water away from the coastline and colder water rises from deeper in the ocean to replace it. Cape Town’s strong south-easterly summer winds can produce particularly strong upwelling along the Atlantic coast.

As a result, the water around Camps Bay, Clifton and other Atlantic beaches can remain very cold even when the air temperature is high.

The City of Cape Town gives typical sea temperatures west of Cape Point of approximately 10–15°C.

The Muizenberg Side

Muizenberg lies on the False Bay side of the Cape Peninsula.

False Bay is generally considerably warmer than the Atlantic Seaboard, particularly during summer. The shape and orientation of the bay, together with prevailing winds and solar heating, allow surface waters to become warmer.

The City of Cape Town gives typical summer sea temperatures in False Bay of approximately 16–22°C.

This means that Muizenberg can sometimes be several degrees warmer than Camps Bay on the same day, despite the relatively short distance between the two beaches.

Why Is There Such a Difference?

Cape Point separates two contrasting coastal environments.

To the west, the Atlantic coastline is strongly affected by cold-water upwelling associated with the Benguela system. Inside False Bay, conditions allow the surface water to warm considerably more during summer.

The difference is not simply because one beach faces the Atlantic Ocean and the other faces False Bay. Wind direction, upwelling, currents, tides and recent weather conditions can all cause sea temperatures to change from day to day.

There is therefore no single fixed temperature for either side of the peninsula.

As a general rule, however, Camps Bay and Cape Town’s Atlantic beaches have cold water, while Muizenberg and the False Bay coastline have noticeably warmer water.

It is one of the most distinctive features of Cape Town’s coastline: two beaches separated by a relatively short distance can have remarkably different sea temperatures.
