If you’re visiting South Africa and booking a tour, you might be wondering how much you’re expected to tip your tour guide.
The first thing to know is that tipping a tour guide in South Africa is not compulsory. A tip should always be a thank you for good service, not something you feel pressured into giving.
But if you’ve had a fantastic day with your guide, a tip is certainly appreciated.
How Much Should I Tip?
There isn’t one fixed rule.
For a private full-day tour, around R200 to R500 per person is a reasonable guide if you’ve had a really good experience. If you feel your guide has gone above and beyond and you want to give more, that’s entirely up to you.
For a multi-day tour such as the Garden Route, you may prefer to tip your guide at the end of the entire trip rather than at the end of each day. There’s no magic percentage or amount — give what you feel reflects the service you received.
If you’re travelling as a family or group, you also don’t necessarily need to calculate a separate tip from every person. A tip from the group is perfectly fine.
Should I Tip in Cash?
Cash is usually the easiest way to tip a tour guide.
South African rand is ideal, but if you’re at the end of your holiday and have foreign currency left over, you can always ask your guide if they’re happy to accept it.
Don’t Feel Pressured
This is probably the most important part.
You should never finish a tour worrying about whether you tipped the “correct” amount.
If you had a great experience and would like to tip your guide, they’ll appreciate it. If you don’t tip, you shouldn’t be made to feel uncomfortable about it either.
And if you’re Australian or Dutch, don’t worry — your guide probably wasn’t expecting a tip anyway!
