If you want to understand why Plettenberg Bay has become one of South Africa’s favourite holiday destinations, start with the beach.

Known simply as “Plett” to many South Africans, Plettenberg Bay is one of the Garden Route’s best-known holiday towns. It is a place where South Africans have been coming for generations to enjoy the beaches, warm summer weather, restaurants and relaxed coastal lifestyle.

For many South Africans, Plett is more than simply a sightseeing stop. It is a holiday destination. During the summer holidays, families and friends head down to the Garden Route to spend time by the ocean and enjoy everything the area has to offer.

Central Beach is one of the busiest beaches in Plettenberg Bay and sits close to the centre of town. It is popular with visitors and locals and provides easy access to restaurants, bars and various activities.

But Central Beach is only one part of what makes Plett special.

Robberg Beach stretches along the coastline towards the famous Robberg Peninsula and is a wonderful place for a walk beside the Indian Ocean. The Robberg area is also known for its dramatic scenery, marine life and archaeological history.

There are also other beautiful beaches around Plett, including Lookout Beach and Keurboomstrand. Lookout Beach is close to the Keurbooms River, while Keurboomstrand offers a much quieter and more spacious stretch of coastline.

Plett is also a great place for whale watching during the season. Southern right whales can be seen along the South African coastline during their annual migration, and Plettenberg Bay is an excellent location from which to look for them.
